The standard, explained

What actually makes someone qualified to hold this role

The role of an AI ethicist is often misunderstood in hiring, frequently seen as simply a personality type: someone reflective, who is not afraid to ask the tough questions. While these traits matter, they do not fully capture what the job demands.

Beneath the surface, what truly defines this role are concrete skills and knowledge.

An AI ethicist needs a solid grasp of ethical reasoning that applies directly to real-world, specific challenges. They must have enough technical know-how to understand a model’s true capabilities and limitations. A clear awareness of relevant policy and regulation is essential, alongside a practical understanding of how the business operates. Most critically, they need the courage to voice uncomfortable truths clearly to those who might prefer to avoid them.

We break this comprehensive skill set into five key domains:

  1. risk,
  2. governance,
  3. technical expertise,
  4. ethics, and
  5. law.

These pillars shape the framework behind our self-audits, interview scorecards, and Annual Competency Reports.

What often causes candidates to fall short is not missing some experience here or there. It is usually an imbalance: strong on ethics and law but less experience in technical or operational insight, or vice versa. This tends to reflect their background; whether from HR, compliance, or engineering.

Mastering the theory has never been the challenge. The real test, and what we focus on assessing, is the willingness to speak up candidly, even when it might disrupt organisational comfort zones. That is exactly the quality our interview process aims to identify and nurture.

Where this connects

This is the exact shape the self-audit, the interview scorecard in the Organisation Toolkit, and the Annual Competency Report are all built to score against.
